LAPD approves the use of drone program – Daily Mail

The Police Commission, a civilian oversight panel, gave the green light to the program in a 3-1 vote yesterday. The decision means the police force will trial the aircraft as part of a one-year pilot scheme. At a press conference after the vote, Chief Charlie Beck tried to ease concerns by insisting they will not be weaponized or used to spy on people. He said: ‘They’re not used for general surveillance. They’re not used for the investigation of low-level crime. They’re used only by special weapons and tactics teams involved in very high impact situations.’ Pictured, protesters after the decision (left and top right) and a Wisconsin officer using a drone (bottom right, file picture).
